A World Meteorological Organization study found that 2025 was among the driest years on record for the world's rivers, with global freshwater reserves—including groundwater, lakes and rivers—depleted to 42% below normal levels, the lowest in more than three decades. The Guardian has launched a year-long 'Our Rivers' project examining the mounting pressures facing waterways worldwide, which sustain food, trade and drinking water for billions of people.
