Researchers studying three Clusia tree species found that some tropical trees evolved to take in carbon dioxide at night, keeping pores closed during the day to conserve water. The water-saving photosynthesis strategy, known as CAM, arose independently through ancient genome duplications and extensive genetic reshuffling rather than a single evolutionary change.
