On the night of 23-24 September, Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones, triggering air-raid warnings across most Ukrainian oblasts and causing numerous explosions in the capital. The attack killed at least two people and injured dozens (reports rose to 45 injured), damaged residential and commercial buildings, a data centre, a pharmaceutical plant, petrol stations, and destroyed the historic Railway Market building; fuel tanks and internet infrastructure were also hit, disrupting services for around 100,000 households and suspending urban rail service. The strike came as President Zelenskyy was discussing the Graham Act and tougher sanctions with US congressmen, and coincided with a wider overnight barrage that also hit Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv region, killing one and injuring 11 more. Ukraine's air defence reportedly downed 122 of 161 drones launched. The attack underscored continuing Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure even as diplomatic efforts toward a truce were underway.
