Several moderate earthquakes were recorded around the Pacific in the past day: a magnitude 6.5 quake 169 km west of Nikolski, Alaska; a magnitude 6.4 quake 49 km northeast of Kainantu, Papua New Guinea; a magnitude 4.6 quake in Indonesia potentially affecting 60,000 people; a magnitude 5.0 quake near Fiji affecting about 10,000 people; and a magnitude 4.9 quake in the Samoa Islands region with no population affected. No damage or casualties were reported for any of these events.
