A new report by climate scientists projects that the current 'super' El Niño—already the strongest on record for the phenomenon, months before reaching its expected peak—will cause more than 450,000 additional deaths from heat by February 2027. The toll is expected to be global, spanning from Nigeria to the United States and Indonesia to India, compounding deaths already linked to climate-driven warming. Separately, California's governor declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the same super El Niño bringing an extremely wet winter with severe storms and flooding to the state, following already record-breaking temperatures.
