A study tracking more than 95,000 people found that greater REM sleep was associated with lower risk of 83 diseases, including dementia, heart failure, and Parkinson's disease, while more deep sleep correlated with lower risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and major depression. The findings strengthen evidence that sleep architecture, not just sleep duration, plays a significant role in long-term health outcomes.
