A new tropical storm, Gonzalo, formed early Friday, September 25 south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue a Tropical Storm Warning for the islands. As of 2 a.m. CVT, Gonzalo had maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph and a minimum pressure of 1004 mb, moving north-northwest at 8 mph. GDACS estimates roughly 419,000 people could be affected by tropical-storm-force winds in Cape Verde. The storm developed from a disturbance (Invest AL90) tracked in the NHC's Atlantic outlook, and forecasters are monitoring its track as it approaches the islands.
