Researchers found that giving C. elegans worms a magnet-producing bacterium extended their average lifespan by more than 43%, while also protecting neurological and intestinal health. Much of the effect was traced to suppression of ferroptosis, a damaging iron-linked form of cell death associated with oxidative stress. The findings offer a novel angle on aging research, suggesting that microbiome-based interventions targeting ferroptosis could become a new avenue for extending healthy lifespan in future studies.
