In excerpts from his new memoir published by the Wall Street Journal, former WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich described how Vladimir Putin spent more than an hour trying to convince a world leader that Gershkovich, who was arrested in 2023 and convicted in Russia on spying charges, was genuinely a spy rather than a journalist. Gershkovich also described his 2023 arrest as a carefully planned FSB sting operation, the first arrest of a U.S. reporter on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War.
