Hurricane Polo strengthened into an extremely powerful Category 5 hurricane in the eastern Pacific, with NOAA reconnaissance aircraft measuring a minimum central pressure of 911 mb and sustained winds near 175 mph as of the night of September 25. On September 22 Polo registered 892 mb, making it the second-most intense hurricane on record in the eastern Pacific, fueled by exceptionally warm ocean waters. The storm was located a few hundred miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes and moving WNW toward Mexico's Baja California Sur. The US National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for portions of Baja California Sur, and GDACS raised an orange alert estimating about 251,000 people could be affected by Category 1-strength winds or higher. Authorities in the region are bracing for potentially catastrophic wind and storm-surge impacts as the storm approaches the coast.
