Toshio Masuda, director of the influential 'Uchuu Senkan Yamato' (Space Battleship Yamato) film series, died on August 26 at a Tokyo hospital due to natural causes, the Directors Guild of Japan announced. Born in Kobe in 1927, Masuda had a long career in Japanese cinema and animation before his death at 98; a private funeral was held for close relatives.
