According to a September 24 Insider Gaming report, Ubisoft Milan — the studio behind Mario + Rabbids — was reportedly developing a Zelda spin-off internally codenamed 'Goliath' that would have starred series villain Ganondorf as protagonist instead of Link. Nintendo was said to have been initially receptive to the concept during early development. However, Nintendo ultimately pulled the plug on the project before it progressed further, leaving the ambitious spin-off unrealized. The report offers a rare glimpse into how far outside developers have been allowed to experiment with Nintendo's flagship franchise.
