Astronomers discovered a white dwarf star with no detectable surrounding disk that has nonetheless produced a powerful shock wave persisting for at least 1,000 years. Researchers say the star's magnetic field may partly explain the phenomenon, but an unidentified additional energy source, dubbed a 'mystery engine,' may also be responsible.
