Researchers found that scented cleaning products can react with indoor ozone to create billions or trillions of invisible nanoparticles capable of penetrating deep into the lungs. The pollution forms within minutes of cleaning and, in some cases, may produce an inhaled particle dose comparable to or greater than standing near heavy traffic. The findings raise new concerns about indoor air quality risks from common household products and could influence guidance on ventilation and product formulation.
