The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity report for Sept. 10-16, 2026 documented continuing or new eruptive activity at numerous volcanoes worldwide, including new Strombolian eruptions and an ash plume at Krakatau (Indonesia); continuing crater incandescence and high sulfur dioxide emissions at Aira/Sakurajima (Japan); ongoing ash plumes at Dukono, Ibu, Karangetang and Lewotolok (Indonesia); lava effusion at Great Sitkin (Alaska, US); volcanic earthquakes and ash emissions at Kanlaon and Mayon (Philippines); continued eruption within Kilauea's summit caldera (Hawaii, US); and thermal anomalies/lava flows at Klyuchevskoy and Krasheninnikov (Russia). Most of these volcanoes remained at low-to-moderate alert levels (Yellow or Level 2 of 4) with localized exclusion zones of 2-4 km, and no reports of deaths, injuries or major damage were noted across the sites monitored this week.
