Bangkok declared a flood disaster after nearly two days of extreme rainfall — more than 300mm in 48 hours — inundated homes, shops and roads across the Thai capital in late September 2026. Nearly 4,900 people were evacuated to shelters and about 52,000 households were affected as canals overflowed and murky floodwater surged into residential and commercial areas, leaving some cars submerged and residents wading through waist-deep water. A related GDACS flood alert for Thailand covering early October reported no deaths or displacements as conditions continued to be monitored, though the Guardian's on-the-ground reporting described widespread hardship as residents began drying out flooded homes.
