Bangkok was declared a disaster zone after days of heavy rain — more than 300-330mm in 48 hours — flooded homes, shops and roads across Thailand's capital, leaving streets waist-deep in water. Nearly 4,900 people were evacuated to shelters and about 52,000 households were affected, with residents navigating flooded streets by boat as canals overflowed into surrounding neighborhoods. The flooding, which peaked over the weekend of Sept 26-28, stemmed from an active low-pressure cell bringing continuous heavy rainfall during the peak of Thailand's rainy season; officials and residents said this year's flooding was worse than usual. A GDACS alert also flags a fresh flood risk in Thailand forecast for Oct 5-7, suggesting the situation may not be fully resolved.
