Scientists identified a stem cell that acts as a master source for tendon and ligament cells throughout the body, finding that in lumbar spinal stenosis these cells become abnormally active, driving the ligament overgrowth that squeezes spinal nerves. In mouse studies, researchers found that reducing calcium signaling halted the abnormal growth, pointing to a potential new therapeutic target for the painful, mobility-limiting condition.
