A group of Democratic lawmakers led by Reps. Joaquin Castro, Madeleine Dean, Don Beyer, Greg Casar, Sara Jacobs and Veronica Escobar introduced the 'Stop the Settlements Act,' which would sanction and block imports tied to Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza. Separately, a Senate resolution demanding accountability for the deaths of nine American citizens killed by Israel in the occupied West Bank since 2022 failed to pass, including the case of Turkish-American student Aysenur Ezgi Eygi. Together the measures reflect intensifying but so far unsuccessful efforts within parts of the US Congress to impose consequences on Israel over settlement expansion and the killing of American citizens, amid broader debate over US support for Israel.
