Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve's early access launch was marred by confusion over a pre-order bonus; buyers believed they'd receive a standalone copy of 2006's Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, but it turned out not to be standalone. The developer has since apologized, explained how the mix-up happened, and pledged to explore solutions. Separately, PC Gamer recommended a cheaper indie flight-combat alternative with better HOTAS and VR support for players put off by Ace Combat's price.
