The Smithsonian/USGS weekly volcanic activity report for September 16-22, 2026 documented new eruptive activity at Ambrym (Vanuatu), where dark ash-and-gas plumes and minor ashfall were reported downwind of Marum Crater, and at Chikurachki (Russia), where explosive activity sent ash plumes up to 4.6 km drifting northeast and east. Krakatau (Indonesia) showed declining activity following a large early-September eruption, while Nevados de Chillán (Chile) produced ash plumes and seismicity consistent with ongoing unrest. Continuing eruptions were also reported at Tokachidake and Aira/Sakurajima (Japan), Etna (Italy), Great Sitkin (US/Alaska), Ibu and Karangetang (Indonesia), Kanlaon (Philippines), and Kilauea (Hawaii, US), where new vents opened and fed small lava flows within Halema'uma'u Crater. All systems remained at low-to-moderate alert levels with no reported casualties, though local advisories urged residents to stay clear of hazard zones.
