A study of 16,000 apparently healthy adults found that more than half showed signs of atherosclerosis, with detectable arterial plaque in about 1 in 13 people aged 18 to 29. Researchers say direct imaging of arteries could reveal cardiovascular disease risk years or decades before symptoms appear. The findings suggest cardiovascular disease prevention efforts may need to begin much earlier in life than currently practiced.
