Russian forces launched a wave of overnight attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas on October 1-2, repeatedly striking the Pivdennyi Bridge (hit at least three times in one day) and the Paton and Metro bridges, forcing their closure and halting metro service pending structural inspections. A Russian strike also hit a 25-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district, killing one person and injuring two, while a separate strike on a warehouse in Hostomel (Kyiv Oblast) injured an 8-year-old girl and a 66-year-old man. Ukraine's air defense said it downed 88 of 108 Russian drones fired overnight, including 47 jet-powered Shaheds, though hits were recorded at 11 locations. President Zelensky said Russia is intensifying strikes on civilian infrastructure to pressure Ukrainians into leaving the capital and predicted further escalation ahead of the US midterm elections. The attacks are part of a broader pattern of stepped-up Russian strikes on Kyiv that Ukrainian officials say is aimed at destabilizing the capital ahead of winter.
