Researchers demonstrated that quantum fluctuations in supposedly empty space can enhance superconductivity, raising the transition temperature of an ultrathin material by as much as 5.4%. The finding suggests that specially engineered vacuum environments could be used to control quantum materials without any direct physical contact. The discovery opens new possibilities for manipulating superconducting behavior and could inform future approaches to designing high-temperature superconductors.
