An Omani national flying as co-pilot on a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv attacked the captain with an axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft, reportedly intending to crash it into Tel Aviv's airport or a building. The pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, described opening the cockpit door to let others in during the struggle, while passengers recounted terror as the plane nosedived more than 17,000 feet before being brought under control; the attacker has been named as Hamam al-Hammami. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the attacker showed clear 'Islamist radical indoctrination' and intended to down the plane, and he was described by officials as a 'lone wolf' extremist. Australia has opened an investigation into the co-pilot's links to the country, reflecting the international scope of the inquiry into the incident.
