Researchers discovered that E-cadherin, a protein best known for holding cells and tissues together, also plays a role in helping epithelial cells engulf nearby dead cells. Using live zebrafish and mouse embryos, scientists found cells can dramatically reshape their lower surfaces to clear cellular debris while keeping their upper, barrier-forming surfaces intact.
