A suspected outbreak of pneumonic plague emerged in Russia's Irkutsk region after a hospital inpatient unit in Shelekhov closed on October 1. Media reported that 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, a lab technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, died after allegedly breaking a test tube containing the bacterium; officials have only confirmed 'pneumonia of unknown etiology.' Nearly 200 people were placed under observation, several Irkutsk hospitals imposed three-week quarantines, and a nearby town's administration briefly warned residents against travel before deleting the post. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged Russians to ignore 'rumors' and trust official sources, while Buryatia's regional head confirmed the woman died from an unspecified form of plague. The White House and European Commission said they are monitoring the situation and are prepared to coordinate a response if necessary.
