New research indicates animal life could have emerged as early as 800 to 700 million years ago, roughly 200 million years before previous estimates, potentially placing the first animals before or during the Snowball Earth period. Scientists say the soft bodies of these early animals were rarely preserved, explaining the lack of fossil evidence.
