The National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories late on October 6, 2026 on newly formed Tropical Depression Nine, located in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico about 345 miles west of Progreso, Mexico. As of 10 PM CDT Tuesday, the system had maximum sustained winds of about 35 mph and a central pressure of 1005 mb, moving slowly east at about 5 mph. Forecasters say the depression is expected to quickly strengthen in the coming days. GDACS estimates roughly 729,000 people could be affected if the system reaches Category 1 (120 km/h) wind speeds, with the United States flagged as a low-vulnerability country in its path. The storm's slow motion and location in the Gulf raise concerns about potential impacts to the U.S. Gulf Coast as it develops further.
