A 200-year-old cottonwood tree has been cut down to make way for a 44-kilometer US-Mexico double border wall expansion, despite local protests against the environmental impact. The felling represents a controversial trade-off between border security infrastructure and preservation of established wildlife habitat and ecological sites along the border. Environmental groups and local residents have objected to the removal of the historic tree.
