Overnight into October 7, Russia carried out one of its largest combined missile and drone attacks of the war, striking Kyiv, Pryluky (Chernihiv Oblast), Kremenchuk (Poltava Oblast), Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Oleksandriia. Ukraine's Air Force said it downed 161 of the incoming aerial assets, but a ballistic missile strike on a five-story apartment building in Pryluky killed at least 20 people, including five children, with dozens injured as rescuers dug through rubble; a separate strike on Kremenchuk killed two and injured up to 47. President Zelensky called the wave of attacks, which coincided with Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday, a 'birthday gift' from the Russian army. In Kyiv, strikes hit the Borshchahivka pharmaceutical plant, a cardboard and paper mill in Obukhiv, the Dovzhenko Film Studio (damaged for a third time), a publisher's warehouse, a car-parts retailer's warehouse, and residential buildings in the Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi districts, killing residents and triggering emergency power and water outages across the capital. An unexploded ballistic missile had to be defused in a residential area, and Ukraine's energy ministry warned of further rolling blackouts as the grid came under strain.
