An oil tanker, the Aframax Rio, caught fire off Sochi on October 6 after an attack by uncrewed boats while carrying crude oil from Novorossiysk to India; all 23 crew were evacuated and Sochi closed its beaches as smoke blanketed the coast. Separately, unidentified drones attacked two merchant vessels off Bulgaria's coast, sinking one, in what Bulgaria's prime minister said was the first such attack near Bulgarian waters; Sofia's defense minister said it was unclear whether Russian or Ukrainian drones were responsible. The European Commission condemned strikes on commercial vessels in the Black Sea as unacceptable, warning they threaten international maritime security, as both the Sochi and Bulgaria incidents added to concerns about the safety of Black Sea shipping routes.
