Flash floods struck the town of Madrigueras in south-east Spain, killing a 102-year-old woman and forcing the rescue of 90 people by firefighters. The town was hit with 142 litres of rain per square metre in just two and a half hours, submerging streets, damaging businesses and trapping residents. GDACS separately reported a flood event in Spain beginning Sept 28 and lasting until Oct 8, 2026, with a total of 1 death and 1,341 people displaced. The flooding followed Spain's hottest summer on record, during which more than 2,000 people are thought to have died from heat-related causes in August, underscoring the compounding effects of extreme heat and subsequent flooding.
