Yemen's Houthi movement claimed a third attack on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on October 8, 2026, severely damaging at least one plane, alongside strikes on airports in Najran and an airbase in Khamis Mushait. The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted several of the ballistic missiles, while the Houthis also warned staff to evacuate Saudi oil facilities and claimed responsibility for hitting a tanker in the Gulf off Qatar. The attacks prompted Lufthansa and Air India to suspend flights to Riyadh, and come amid a broader escalation of the Yemen war that Yemeni government forces say has pushed them to 'secure' the Red Sea waterway. The strikes have triggered a regional security response: France and Saudi Arabia are weighing military options to protect the Yanbu oil terminal, and Turkey said it is assessing defensive (but not offensive) support for Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Pakistan. Yemen's internationally recognized government is also seeking tribal support to fight the Iran-aligned Houthis as the conflict intensifies.
