Overnight into October 8, 2026, Ukrainian forces carried out a series of long-range drone strikes deep inside Russia, hitting a Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan region (housing two supercomputers and located at a defense-linked machine-tool plant), Russia's largest oil refinery in Omsk over 2,500 km from the border using upgraded FP-1 drones, and the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat refinery in Bashkortostan roughly 1,400 km away, starting major fires at both refineries. The Yandex strike knocked out the data center entirely, disrupting company services and causing websites of major Russian outlets to stop loading; it marked the first confirmed Ukrainian strike on Russian data infrastructure, following earlier Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centers that Moscow called a 'forced digital detox.' Zelensky said Ukraine was responding to Russian strikes in kind and that Kyiv was preparing further responses to the wave of Russian escalation.
