Hurricane Simon became a hurricane on the evening of October 8, located about 235 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph and a central pressure of 985 mb. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center flagged the storm for rapid intensification as satellite imagery showed a developing central dense overcast and curved banding. GDACS issued an orange alert, estimating about 546,000 people could be exposed to category-1-strength winds as the storm, moving slowly west-northwest, approaches Mexico's coast.
