A brilliant yellow coral discovered off the coast of Costa Rica proved so unusual that scientists created an entirely new family to classify it, naming it Laurinque elenya, or 'golden tree of the stars.' Genetic analysis revealed the meter-tall coral belongs to a previously unknown evolutionary lineage. The discovery adds to scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and highlights how much remains unknown about marine ecosystems even in well-studied regions.
