Ukrainska Pravda investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach and cameraman Yaroslav Bondarenko were detained in Vienna on October 8 while on an assignment investigating a former Ukrainian prosecutor general who fled the country. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the pair were suspected of espionage and involvement in a criminal organization; Tkach described being held at gunpoint and restrained 'like terrorists,' and Bondarenko was injured during the detention. Tkach was released on October 9 but remained out of contact afterward. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry and embassy sought explanations from Austrian authorities, and the Committee to Protect Journalists urged Vienna to clarify the circumstances of the detention.
