Tropical Storm Rachel, active in the eastern Pacific since late September, was located several hundred miles southwest of the Baja California Peninsula as of Friday night (Oct 9), with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph and a central pressure of 995 mb. The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the east coast of Baja California as Rachel accelerated northeastward; GDACS classified the system as a low-level (green) alert with no significant population impact expected from category-1 winds.
