NASA formally released its Request for Proposals inviting private industry to submit plans for next-generation commercial space stations in low Earth orbit, part of its long-awaited effort to transition away from direct government ownership of orbital outposts after the International Space Station. The agency said it intends to maintain a continuous U.S. presence in low Earth orbit throughout the transition.
