Scientists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory say they may have identified a dramatically more efficient path to fusion energy by reversing the conventional approach of reactor design: heating plasma first and then increasing its density, rather than the other way around. Their calculations suggest future reactors could reach self-sustaining ignition using far less energy while avoiding hidden complications that typically make ignition harder to achieve.
