Scientists discovered a brilliant yellow coral off the coast of Costa Rica so unusual that they had to create an entirely new taxonomic family to classify it. Named Laurinque elenya, or 'golden tree of the stars,' the meter-tall colonies rise from seafloors covered in brittle stars, and genetic analysis showed the coral represents a previously unknown evolutionary lineage.
