A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, on October 11, 2026, followed within hours by a series of strong aftershocks including a M6.6 near Río Grande, M6.0 near La Tronosa, M5.8 near El Cacao, and smaller M5.0, M4.7 and M4.6 quakes. GDACS alerts indicate the tremors affected populated areas, with up to roughly 490,000 people within 100km of some of the aftershocks. No casualty or damage figures were reported in the available alerts. The sequence began with the M7.7 mainshock and continued through the early hours, with shallow depths (around 10km for several events) raising concern about shaking intensity near populated areas of Panama. Authorities have not yet released damage or casualty reports, though the size and frequency of aftershocks suggest the region remains at elevated risk of further seismic activity.
