Hurricane Simon intensified into a very dangerous major hurricane off the Pacific coast of Mexico, with the National Hurricane Center reporting maximum sustained winds of 155 mph and a minimum central pressure of 928 mb as of October 10. The storm's eyewall was nearing the coast near Manzanillo, prompting officials to urge residents in the hurricane warning area to rush preparations to completion. GDACS issued a red alert, estimating about 454,000 people could be affected by category 1-strength winds or higher. Forecasters warned of rapidly deteriorating conditions overnight as the compact, small-eyed storm approached land, with life-threatening storm surge, destructive winds and flooding rain expected across west-central Mexico.
