Two tornadoes, including waterspouts that came ashore from the Mediterranean, struck the coastal town of Marsala and nearby Petrosino in western Sicily on Friday October 9, injuring dozens of people and damaging buildings including a school. At least 11 people were taken to hospital after being struck by flying debris and shattered glass, and cars were overturned in what experts called an almost unprecedented event for the Italian island. The storms left a trail of devastation across the area south of Trapani, with video footage showing the tornadoes approaching the coast before causing extensive structural damage.
