Scientists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory say they may have found a more efficient route to fusion energy by reversing the conventional approach—heating plasma first and then increasing its density. Their calculations suggest future reactors could reach self-sustaining fusion using far less energy while avoiding problems that typically make ignition harder.
