A major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, early on October 12, 2026, according to the USGS. The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks including magnitude 6.6, 6.0, 5.8, 4.6 and 4.5 events recorded across the country over the following hours. GDACS alerts indicate the earthquakes potentially affected hundreds of thousands of people within 100km, with one alert citing up to 620,000 people in the affected radius. No deaths, injuries or damage figures were reported in the available alerts, but the strength of the main shock and the number of aftershocks make this a significant seismic event for the region. Authorities and disaster monitoring agencies are continuing to track the aftershock sequence.
