Hurricane Isaias made landfall as a Category 2 storm near Destin, Florida, late on a recent Friday, prompting states of emergency in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi and evacuation orders for millions of residents across the Gulf coast. The storm brought life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds and heavy rainfall, and as it weakened to a post-tropical cyclone and moved north through the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, at least four people were killed, some by falling trees. Nearly 396,000 customers in the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama lost power, with figures earlier reaching half a million outages. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said no search-and-rescue requests had been received, calling it a sign residents heeded warnings. Flash flooding and strong winds remained threats into the Appalachians as the storm's remnants pushed inland, testing emergency response under a downsized FEMA.
