A series of earthquakes shook Panama over October 12-13, 2026, headlined by a major magnitude 7.7 quake near Pitaloza Arriba and a magnitude 6.1 near Río Grande, both recorded by USGS. Numerous aftershocks and related quakes followed, including magnitudes 6.6, 6.0 and 5.8 at nearby locations, plus a cluster of GDACS 'green' alerts ranging from 4.5 to 6.1 magnitude, with one event estimated to affect up to roughly 530,000 people within 100km and about 1,000 people in the most intense shaking zone (MMI≥VII). The quakes were centered in western Panama near Río Grande, Pitaloza Arriba and El Cacao, with depths around 10km. GDACS classified most as low-alert 'green' events, suggesting limited expected humanitarian impact, though the magnitude 7.7 event is significant and could cause localized damage; no casualty or damage figures have yet been reported.
