Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel struck Mexico's Pacific coast in mid-October 2026, killing at least five people and triggering flash flooding that downed trees and power lines, blocked roads and inundated homes in states including Guerrero; a 71-year-old man died when a wall collapsed in Chilpancingo. Security forces used helicopters to rescue dozens of stranded residents. Rachel's remnants then pushed north, battering Baja California, Southern California and Las Vegas with intense waves and flooding that destroyed a boardwalk in Long Beach and damaged beachside homes, and stranding about 70 runners in Utah's Moab 240 ultramarathon, who were later evacuated safely. As of October 14-15, Simon had weakened from hurricane strength to a compact tropical storm located about 275 miles southeast of Cabo San Luis, with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph and minimum central pressure of 991 mb, moving slowly southwest and no longer threatening further significant landfall, though GDACS still rated it an orange-level cyclone alert for Mexico with roughly 62 people in the path of category-1-strength winds.
